About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Do I need a visa for cruise

We are US citizens traveling to take a 7 day cruise out of Shanghai on March 21-28, 2019. We are flying in from Chicago,IL to Beijing(4:35pm)to Shanghai(10:40pm)on March 20, staying in a hotel in Shanghai the night of Mar 20, then onto our Cruise, which travels to different ports in Japan until returning to Shanghai on March 28. We would like to stay at least one more night in Shanghai after cruise, then take flight home on March 30 at 5:50pm.

As long as cruise is scheduled to depart china within 24 hours from scheduled landing in Beijing (your official entry into China) you don't need a visa for part 1.

If your flight departs Shanghai on the way back and also lands in Beijing or another Chinese city you are limited to 24 hours from scheduled arrival in Shanghai.

It your return flight from Shanghai also lands in Japan a visa will be required.
