About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Questions about multiple trips with 72h TWOV

Hello, I am flying to Nepal (on a round trip from Australia) transiting through China both ways. The airports I would be going through are Guangzhou on the way over, and Kunming and Shanghai on the way back. The visits would be two weeks apart and my overall stay for both legs wouldn't be over 72 hours, but is my understanding correct that you can't use 72 hour TWOV in more than one Chinese city? Also there isn't a limit on how many times I can use 72h TWOV in a specific time is there? Should I use the 24h transit on one of my trips? Also how far from airport can you go with these limits? Thanks! (First time travelling to China so sorry about length of questions)

In Guangzhou you are eligible either for the 72h or the 24h twov.
It depends how long your transit is.

On the way back you're limited to 24h as you have 2 stops in China.

You have two stops in Kunming and Shanghai on the way back, that limits you to 24h twov.

Can you please explain the "two stops" limit?
Is it not possible to get two 72 or 144h free transit stops?

Ok so just to confirm: I don't have to get a visa for China as on the way over I can use 24h or 72h TWOV (depending on time to be spent in Guangzhou) but on the way back I can only use the 24h one as I am going into 2 cities?
Does the 24h time limit start as soon as I arrive in the first Chinese city and ends on the scheduled departure time from the 2nd city? Or start again in each city?
Also can I leave the airport with the 24h and 72h rules? Thanks
