About:240-hour Visa-free Transit in Beijing, Tianjin & Hebei

Would I qualify from NZ - Beijing - Japan - NZ count in the 144 hours?

Plan to stay in Beijing for 5 days before heading to Japan. Japan for another week and then back to NZ?
Also would like to take high speed train to Shanghai between those 5 days in Beijing.

Are those possible?

NZ-Beijing (144 hours)-Japan is ok for 144 hours transit without visa, if your passport is from one of the 53 listed countries. But you can't also go to Shanghai unless you get a tourist visa in advance. Transit without visa allows transit in Beijing, or Shanghai, but not both.
