Shanghai 144 Free Transit

I am a US citizen and am flying to Shanghai for tourism for 3 days. I then am flying to Sanya in the Hainan province for 3 days and then back to the US. Can you explain what visas I need? Do I qualify for the 144 hour free transit or do I need to apply for a regular visa? Also, for Sanya, do I have to apply for it?
