About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Stop Over Flights

My father want's to visit me in China.
If he books return flights that begin in Melbourne, stop over in Malaysia for a couple of hours then go on to Shanghai and then do the reverse on the way back would he be able to get the twov?

Of course not as it's not a transit but a visit, so he needs a visa in advance.
