About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Layover 10 hours in Beijing airport

I m traveling back to Newark NJ in USA from Myanmar Yangon airport stopping layover in Beijing for 9-10 hours.

American passport valid and ticket on hand, can I qualify to get a 24 hours free transit? I was told that depending on immigrant officer 's mood, they could deny me leaving airport to visit Great Wall, is that legal to be denied even I meet the requirements to get the free transit?

Please advise, thanks

That's legal and there are no grounds to appeal the decision. Entry to another country is always at the officers discretion and the 24-hour TWOV rule specified that an officer does not have to give a reason if entry is refused.

I wouldn't worry so much in Beijing. Its Shanghai that one is most likely to be denied entry permit and required to spend the time in the airport
