About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Can I travel from the USA to Shanghai and back to the USA for 5 days and qualify for the 144 hrs?

It is 2 of us. 1 US passport and another Mexican passport. from 10/2 to 10/6. Is it possible?

USA > Shanghai > USA is not a transit thus a visa is required. If you add stops in other countries you can avoid this. Its Country A > Shanghai > Country B to be considered a transit. Such as:
USA > Shanghai> Japan > USA or
USA > Hong Kong > Shanghai > USA
