Dear David, there is almost no free hotel shuttle bus in Macau Airport at 1 am. You are advised to take a taxi. And Macau is a small city and taking a taxi won't cost too much but more comfortable, quicker and safer than taking a bus. Hope to be helpful. Nice trip.

So you think it is not safe to ride a bus late at night? I was under the assumption that Macau was not a place where holdups occur. In the reviews I have read online no one mentioned issues with personal criminal acts being committed; unlike Saigon where you can't even wear a shoulder bag.Should we avoid walking outside at night?I appreciate your input and advice.

Generally speaking, you don't need to worry about the safety problem. You can walk outside at night. :)
