Can I just book a day tour to qualify for free visa to Hainan?

My brother and I have just found out about the free visa waiver to this place. We have already bought our air tickets from Kuala Lumpur to Haikou. We did not plan on signing up for a tour package in consideration of our 80-year old father who would not be able to take the strain of organised tours. Would it be all right if we register with the local tour and book from them a day-trip for Haikou and Sanya and we do our sight-seeing for the rest of our time there? Will this qualify us for the free visa?
