More than one stop in China is limited to 24 hour direct transit. You need a Tourist (L) visa for this.

You need a visa. Multiple stops in China immediately limits you to 24 hours transit without visa.

You cant travel between Beijing, Xian and Shanghai on a 72 hour transit without visa . You can only pick one of the 3 regions for the 72 hour stay in Mainland China.
