About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

HK - Shanghai - US (but connecting flight in HK)

I'll be going to Shanghai after I visit Hong Kong. I've been traveling for over a year now. I plan on flying into Shanghai Sept 20th and depart Sept 26th. I already purchased my flight ticket to the US. It has a connecting flight in Hong Kong... I do not need to recheck my baggage or go through immigration again. It's only 2.5 hour layover to switch planes. This is clearly stated on the ticket. That said, since I have this short layover in HK, does this mean I won't be approved for the 144 hour twov exemption?

Sorry you will need to get a visa or change your flights. Ultimate destination is not part if the equation. This is considered Hong Kong > Shanghai > Hong Kong thus not a transit.

You don’t qualify for 144hr twov because of the stop in Hong Kong.

Thanks for the reply. They sure do make things complicated to want to explore their country and culture... I guess my best option is to either book my flight to Shanghai from Macau or find a flight that connects in a different country.. This is really a silly loophole to benefit airlines in a minor way at best

Better than it was before nearly everything required a visa. The primary purpose of the program is to let you travel through china not to travel to china.
