US Passport Mongolia- HK- Guangzhou- HK - USA

We have a U.S. Passport. We are flying from Mongolia to Hong Kong. Taking the ferry from Hong Kong to Guangzhou. Stay for 2 nights in Guangzhou. Take the ferry back to Hong Kong and stay a night. Then fly to the United States. Would I need a Visa?

Unfortunately, this is not possible because the basic rule of 240 hour visa free transit requires that the immediate points before and after mainland China have to be in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). As you can see, both of your immediate points are in Hong Kong. The solution for this problem is to introduce a nearby Macau into your itinerary and to create your itinerary in this way: Hong Kong (by ferry to) - Macau (by ferry to) - Shekou (by train to) - Guangzhou (by train to) - Hong Kong. Like this your itinerary becomes eligible for 240 hour visa free transit and you do not need a visa of any kind. Simply speaking, like this your immediate points will be in two different territories. Also, Shekou port is eligible port to use under 240 hour visa free transit. It is important to emphasize that you will have to buy your train ticket from Guangzhou to Hong Kong West Kowloon station even before you depart from Macau toward mainland China and to print out the booking confirmation that will be sent to your email inbox. You will have that printout with you at hand because you will be asked to present one in both Macau and upon your arrival in Shekou. Have a nice visit to China.
