My employer won’t cancel my work permit - can I re-enter China?

My previous employer will not cancel my work permit or residence permit. I came back to the UK. Will it be safe / legal to go back to China with the residence permit still in my passport?

What issues could I face if I do this?
Thanks!

As I know, after you stop the contract, your employer should cancel your work permit or residence permit. If the employer doesn't do that, maybe you could enter China with that residence permit. But I cannot guarantee that. You are advised to contact the China embassy to inquire the details.
