About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Auckland-Guangzhou-Shanghai- Guangzhou-Auckland

Flying Auckland to Shanghai via Guangzhou, and same route back to Auckland. Do I need some sort of transit visa for Guangzhou?

You will need a Tourist (L) since you are visiting china and not in transit.

But the 144 hour free tramsit applies in Shanghai and not leaving airport in Guangzhou, so do I need one?

This clearly requires a visa. It’s not a transit in China. And even if it were, two stops in China would limit you to 24 hours anyway.
