SFO > PEK > HND

Just want to clarify so I make sure I'm doing this right - I am an American flying from San Francisco to Tokyo with a long layover in Beijing. I was planning on leaving the airport, checking into a hotel then coming back the next day (all within 22 hours). Would I need a visa or anything special? Thanks!
