About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Can the transit be on 2 separate tickets?

I'm an Australian passport holder and plan to transit Shanghai on the way home from Europe.
Routing would be Helsinki - Shanghai then on a separate ticket fly Shanghai - Hong Kong or maybe Bangkok haven't decided yet. Does it matter that there are 2 separate tickets involved. I'd be looking at the 144 hour free transit. Thanks.

You can get the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai. Separate tickets will be fine. Don't worry.
