About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Traveling to Shanghai. Hello, I am trying to clarify if I need to obtain a visa for my trip.

I am I US citizen flying out of JFK Monday and arriving Tuesday 3:20pm in Guangzhou. I have a 19hr layover. I planned to leave the airport and explore the city before my flight Wednesday morning at 10:30am.

Wednesday-From Guangzhou I arrive in Shanghai 1:10pm and will be staying there until my planned departure Monday 12:30pm back to Guangzhou for a 5hr layover and then a 7:35pm flight back to the US.

But after reading the 144 hour visa free transit rule for Shanghai it seems like I don’t need a visa.

You have two stops in China and this limits you to 24 hours transit without visa.

So is this USA > Guangzhou > Shanghai > Guangzhou > USA? This is not a transit at all. So not even eligible for the 24 hour direct transit.
