About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Does stopover in Japan qualify as a different country?

We are flying 17 October from the USA to Tokyo. We are in Japan for 20 hours, and then fly to Shanghai, arriving on 19 October. We leave Shanghai on 25 October, get a connecting flight in Beijing, and then fly back to USA. We arrive back in the USA on 25 October. Does that itinerary qualify for the 144 hour visa-free trip? Technically, we are flying Japan-Shanghai-USA. Thank you. Don

It does not qualify for 144 hours transit without visa because of the stop in Beijing. You need visas or different flights.

But we do not have a "stop" in Beijing. We have a connecting flight. Our flight to USA leaves Beijing airport 3 hours after our flight from Shanghai. Does that make a difference? Thanks.

A connecting flight is a stop.
In Beijing you have to clear immigration as you're leaving the country there not in Shanghai ( Shanghai - Beijing is just a domestic flight).

And 2 stops in different areas are not allowed under the 144h twov.
