departing China from a different city that I arrived at

I am arriving in Beijing from New York on my home to Australia after a US visit. I then have a connecting domestic flight from Beijing to Shanghai shortly after as I hope to stay 1-2 nights in Shanghai before flying home from Shanghai to Australia. Is this possible without a visa?
