About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Flying to Shanghai via xian

Hi there,
Just wondering would the following scenario be eligible for the 144 hour free transit? If I fly from Melbourne to Shanghai (with a layover in Xian but not exiting the airport) then to Tokyo would I be eligible for the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai?

No. Two stops in China limits you to 24 hours transit without visa.
