About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hi, London > HK stopover > Seoul > Beijing > HK stopover > UK

I am due to visit a few friends in Asia in September:

London > HK stopover > Seoul > Beijing > HK stopover > UK.

So, I am flying out to Seoul first for six days (with a 2 hour stopover in Hong Kong) and then travel to Shanghai for six days before returning home (with another 2 hour stopover in Hong Kong).

I arrive at 1:30pm on Tuesday 18 in Beijing and leave at 9:40am on Monday 24.

Would this work? Slightly worried with timings if I dont get entry permit hoping to get one on arrival and I dont qualify. Is there anyone I can speak to before I go? When I emailed the embassy they didnt mention this visa.

Thanks - any help much appreciated!

It’s not a voa. If you fly non-stop Seoul-Shanghai-Hong Kong on a UK passport you don’t need a visa for 144 hours in Shanghai (and surrounding area). Only the flights immediately before and immediately after Shanghai matter. Everything else on your itinerary is irrelevant to Chinese immigration.

Your trip: 1. Seoul 2. Shanghai 3. Hong Kong.

As you might know Hong Kong belongs to China for almost 20 years but for the 144-hour free transit it is still considered as another country otherwise that would be very different with free visa not available.

Arriving on Tuesday 18 then 'yes' you can be in Shanghai for the NEXT 6 days: 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24.

Thanks Pierre and Rob for getting back. So just to clarify, I will be ok in Shanghai flying there and getting a 144 transit free transit then?

You’re right it’s: Seoul > Shanghai > Hong Kong technically that they’re bothered about.

Seoul > Shanghai > Hong Kong will be fine for applying the 144h twov in Shanghai. Don't worry.

Thank you! Ive been looking online and it says you need proof of hotel booking but I am staying with a friend. What can I show for this? I have her address but do I need anything else?

If you want to apply for 144h twov, you don't need the hotel reservation. Just prepare your passport, onward ticket, and arrival card for that.
