About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Trip in August

We fly from Honolulu to Beijing to Phuket (12 hours in the airport)
Then after Phuket, we fly back to Beijing and 5 days later fly to Honolulu

Does this itinerary qualify for the 144 hours?

Tried contacting the LA Consulate but no answer

Honolulu > Beijing > Phuket is one transit without visa and Phuket > Beijing > Honolulu is another. Though any other stops in china, even if for an hour with no plane change invalidates this.
