144 hour visa for China

Hi I am trying to find out if I fly from Detroit to Beijing and stay 1 night touring Beijing and then then next day go to Tianjin and cruise around Japan for 7 days (Nagasaki, Japan- Sakaiminato, Japan- Kyoto, Japan) the rest at sea back to Tianjing and then to the airport. Total days Aug 4 - 12.We are holding US passports will we need to get a china Visa or are we qualified for the 144 hour free transit? Thank yoU!
