144 hour free transit. Thanks in advance

Hi, im planning a trip and was wondering if this would work.
I'm planning Hong Kong --> Shanghai (less than 144 hours) --> Macau.
Would this work for the transit?
If not, does it work in reverse? Macau --> Shanghai --> Hong Kong
