About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit
144 hour Visa free transit. I am a US Citizen

planning to be in Beijing for 5 days enroute to Sydney. Do I need a Chinese entry permit?

You don't need it because you can enjoy 144 hr free transit in Beijing.

144 hour TWOV is allowed as long as Beijing is the only stop in China. Any other china stops, even if an hour, void this.
