Stopover in Shanghai. Do I need a visa for this?

I am travelling to Shanghai from Heathrow arriving in Shanghai on Monday 25th June. My friend is an air-hostess and has got a 48 hours layover, so we would like to fly on Tuesday 26th for a day trip to Xian to see the terracotta army and fly back to Shanghai, eventually leaving from Shanghai on weds 27th.

Two stops in mainland China limit you to 24h twov, so you won't qualify for 72 or 144 hr free transit in this trip. You need to apply for a visa beforehand.
