Travel From USA 12 Hour Layover in Shanghai

Hi I am traveling from LAX to Bali with a 12 hour layover in Shanghai. Would I be able to leave to airport during the layover to walk around in Shanghai? If so what kind of visa would I need to ask for at checkin?

You will need to request this after arriving in Shanghai at the transit immigration line. However, keep in mind that Shanghai has strict rules on leaving the airport for layovers under 24 hours which require passengers to present a hotel reservation, and even that would not guarantee entry. Exceptions are only made when switching terminals or airports. There will be no recourse to the officer's decision should your request be refused.
