About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

What's the best route?

I'm trying to see if I would be eligible to do visa free. My main tricket is round trip to and from Beijing. Should I go immediately to Hong Kong (same day), then Shanghai and back to Beijing (no more than 6 days between the two). Or can I do Beijing to Hong Kong to Shanghai then back to Beijing to return to the US? Total between arrival and departure is 9 days. I just don't want to spend them all in Beijing. Thanks

None of those plans work. 144 hours visa-free transit applies to transits in Beijing or Shanghai, but not both. Transiting two cities immediately limits you to 24 hours. If you can change your main ticket to an open jaw XXX-PEK / SHA-XXX you could then fly XXX-PEK-HKG-SHA-XXX and be eligible for 144 hours visa-free in both cities in China. Or else you can apply for a visa in advance.
