About:How to Travel to China without a Visa

Transiting through Shanghai from NYC to Japan....

Hello,

My mother and her friend are going on a tour of Japan from June 30, 2018 to July 13, 2018. They are both US Citizens traveling with USA Passports.

Their flights with China Eastern Airlines have short layovers in Shanghai, China.

June 31, 2018 for 4.5 Hours
July 13, 2018 for 4.5 Hours

Do they need a Chinese entry permit for their layovers in Shanghai when traveling from New York City to Tokyo and then from Osaka back to New York City?

If they do need one, what type of visa exactly do they need and does it need to be a multiple-entry?

Look forward to your reply.

They are eligible for 24 hr direct transit in Shanghai in both ways. No need to apply for a visa for that. Nice trip.

Thank you Lora for your response.

Just so I understand correctly, when they land in Shanghai, they do not need to apply for any visa at all. They simply do a layover and continue on to Japan?

And then same situation on their return back to USA?
Will they have to recheck luggage and go through any customs?

Yes, you are right, no visa is needed for the trip. Please contact with the airlines to ask if your luggage will be delivered to the final destination directly. If yes, you don’t need to claim it after arrival.
