Transit clarificatin

I am visiting a friend in Australia then wanted to fly to Shanghai for only 48 hours. I then would fly home to the UK.

If you fly Australia-Shanghai-UK non-stop with no other stops in China, then you don't need a visa for 48 hours.

Just to clarify, I live in the UK. I will be going to Australia for a few days then Shanghai for 2 days. I then fly home the UK. Can I not get the 72 hour free transit?

You can get the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai. Don't worry.
