Transit Clarification

I plan to visit Japan for business/pleasure and would like to visit Shanghai on my way home. Due to costs/itinerary I might buy the plane ticket one way from LAX to CTS (Saporro), then a multi city flight from NRT to PVG to LAX. Does this count as a transit?

NRT-PVG-LAX non-stop is clearly a transit. Chinese immigration won't be interested in your other flights.
