144 hour free transit possible from Taipei to Beijing?

I am an American citizen who would like to travel from Taipei to Beijing and then to the U.S. My flight from Taipei to Beijing is non-stop and when leaving I fly from Beijing direct to the U.S. Can I use a 72 or 144 hour Visa for this trip? I will only be in Beijing for two days.
