Arriving Beijing Tuesday, at 2:20 PM, travel to Qingdao on Wednesday evening, travel to Shanghai on Thursday afternoon, back to Beijing on Sunday morning to catch a flight back to US on Sunday afternoonCan I use the 144 hour VISA?

There is no 144 hour visa. There is 144 hours transit without visa, which allows transit in one city. You do not qualify for that because you transit in multiple cities. Therefore you need a tourist visa in advance.
