About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

different entry and departure points

I want to fly into Shanghai for a day then catch fast train to Beijing and fly out to my third destination from Beijing. Will the 144 visa free rule apply to this?

No. Two stops in Beijing and Shanghai limit you to the 24 hour direct transit. You should apply for a visa for this trip beforehand.
