About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Joining Celebrity Cruise Ship in Shanghai, USA Passport

We are flying from Seattle to Shanghai on Oct. 25/2018, 2-day stay in Shanghai, and then join a cruise ship on Oct. 27 cruising to Korea, Beijing, & Japan, and then flying back to Seattle from Tokyo. Would this trip qualify for the 144 hr free transit or a 15-day visa-free cruise policy?

Hi, your trip qualifies for the 144 hr visa-free transit in Shanghai and Beijing. So you don't need to apply for visa for that. Nice trip.

I am on the same cruise. I spoke with Celebrity Millenium and they said no I didn't need entry permit , but they then referred me to the Chinese embassy website to verify and a website that. Long story short....yes you will need a Chinese entry permit. I too, read about the short time span of stay, but you will need a visa!!! Please verify for yourself. Don't travel that far from home and ruin a wonderful opportunity to see the beautiful wonders that we are about to embark upon due to miscommunication. Verify for yourself .

Visa advice from Chinese embassy is absolutely worthless and wrong half of the time. The reliable sources are local immigration offices which manage entry rules.

I'm sorry to say but visa is required. According to the itinerary on the Celebrity cruise website, while it does leave Shanghai, China for Korea, it goes back to China and then back to Korea again before going to Kobe Japan. The portion Korea (Seoul)> China > Korea (Jeju) is not a transit
