Do I need a visa Can I enjoy of the free transit 72hrs Visa?

I am American Going from Vietnam, arriving in Beijing at 3:00pm and departing 70 hrs later from Beijing to New York.
Do I need to apply for a Visa or the 72 hrs free transit Visa apply to me? I have hotel and tickets paid already.
