72 Hours Visa Exemption in Shanghai

I will join a cruise departing from the city, I will arrive at Pudong Airport and will stay overnight prior to joining the cruise, the exemption for the 72 hour visa free entry appears to be very specific in that you must have an "airline ticket" will a cruise ticket provide the same facility?

No, 72h visa free transit policy can’t work in that case.
But if your will cruise to another country or HK, Macau or Taiwai, you can enjoy the 144h visa free transit.
If not, you need to apply for a visa in advance.
