3 nights in Beijing and 3 nights in Hong Kong

If I arrive to Beijing from Los Angeles on the 17 of July and depart to Hong Kong on the 20th, then to Chiang Mai. Is the 72-Hour for visa for China enough? Since Hong Kong does not require a Visa.
I have a U.S. Passport

Hi, the free transit policy can cover your trip in mainland China, so you don't need to apply for a regular Chinese visa for that trip.

Is this 72 hour visa obtained at the Beijing Airport, or do I need to apply for it before?

Hi, Analucia

I don't think you are qualified for the 72 hr free visa, because in Beijing airport, it counts from the flights' scheduled arrival time to the departure time. You should contact the Chinese embassy to confirm this.
