144 hour transit visa in China

My husband and I are flying from Tokyo to Shanghai in August 2018 where we are staying for 2 nights. We then embark on a cruise from Shanghai to Sydney, calling at Hong Kong. Are we entitled to the 144 hour free transit and what do we need to do to get it?

Hi, you are entitled to the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai. You need to inform the airline in advance that you want to use the free transit in Shanghai, and show the tickets and passports at the immigration counter upon arrival to apply for it.
