US Greencard holder - traveling to Philippines/Thailand with 2 - 7 Hour layover in Shanghai

I would like to ask if my spouse and I requires a visa.
We are planning a trip to Manila or Bangkok but the airlines will have a 2 to 7 hour layover to Shanghai or Beijing.

If we're going to Manila, the itinerary is San Francisco --> Shanghai (7-hour layover) --> Manila (same route on going back to SF)
If we're going to Bangkok, it is San Francisco --> Beijing (2-hour layover) --> Bangkok (same route on going back to SF)

I hold a Philippine Passport and my spouse holds a Thailand Passport.
We are both USA Permanent Residents (Greencard holder) since 2013.

Our trip will be on December 18/19, 2018. If we need a visa, how soon should we apply?

Thank you so much for your assistance.

Hi, you are able to enjoy 24 hr direct transit in mainland China by traveling like that, and no visa is needed. But your spouse, the Thailand passport holder cannot enjoy the policy. Try to apply for Chinese visa before the trip.

Thanks for the reply. So my wife still needs the Chinese visa even if we both have US Green card?
