Australia-Guangzhou-HK will be fine for free transit policy in Guangzhou, and no visa is needed. HK-Guangzhou-Australia can also qualify for the visa-free transit. When you board the flight/train in Australia/HK, you need to inform them that you want to use the 24 hour direct transit in Guangzhou. Upon arrival, you can go to the transit counter to apply for the 24 hour direct transit.
