About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Would this trip work?

Zurich - Bangkok - Shanghai - Zurich
Still trying to figure out the 3rd country rule and whether it needs to apply on the way TO China or on the way BACK

It's quite simple:
Zurich - Bangkok - Shanghai - Zurich is OK as long as your flights are non-stop.
Zurich - Shanghai - Bangkok - Zurich is also OK if your flights are non-stop.
Zurich - Bangkok - Shanghai - Bangkok - Zurich would not be OK.
Always assuming your passport qualifies.
