beijingshanghai. will the 144 hour visa cover this if we don't leave the airport?

We are flying into Beijing from Ulaanbaatar, and flying on to Seattle the same day.  Our flight has a 5 hour layover in Shanghai.

Hi, if your travel route would be Ulaanbaatar-Beijing and Shanghai or Shanghai and Beijing-Seattle, you cannot enjoy 144 hr free transit. But if the layover time in Beijing and Shanghai is less than 24 hours, you don't need a visa. Otherwise, you need to apply for one before the trip.
