144 hour transit visa in Guangzhou

I have an Australian passport travelling from Australia to Guangzhou visiting Hong Kong for one day, returning to Guangzhou. This trip is from 23 July to 27 July 2018. I then fly to Italy. Do I need the 144 hour visa or normal tourist visa for China

First of all, the 144h vis waiver has not been implemented in Guangdong and it is unknown it will be available by Jul. I wonder if your route is Australia - Hong Kong - Guangzhou - Italy. If yes, you can utilize the 72h visa-free transit.
