About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

72/144 hour visa

I am planning on attending a conference in Shanghai where I would be there for 3 days only. If I fly from Montreal to Shanghai direct and then fly back via Japan to Montreal, does this satisfy the requirements? Do I need to be staying in Japan for any period of time? Does it matter that I would in effect only be transiting through Japan?

Merely transiting through Japan is OK. You don't have to specifically clear immigration and customs in Japan for the sake of visa-free transit because that's outside Chinese immigration's jurisdiction.
