About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Is a China visa necessary for a 3hr lay over

I'm flying from Vancouver to Tokyo with a layover in xiamen for a few hours. A couple of people have left a review stating they were not allowed in on a layover without a Visa. Would I need a 24hr visa to avoid this problem?

There's no such thing as a 24hr visa. If you have a Canadian passport, you can fly Vancouver-Xiamen (up to 72 hours)-Tokyo on non-stop flights without a visa. Whether you can leave the airport and enter China during your connection depends on the immigration officer and the length of your proposed stay. If you want to be sure to pass Chinese immigration for a short stay then you can get a visa in advance.
