for a 4 days stopover in Beijing and another stopover 4 days in shanghai, do I need a visa?

I'm travelling from the UK to Japan via China with 4 days stopovers in Shanghai (on the way to Tokyo) and 4 days stopover in Beijing (on the way back). Do I need a visa?

I presume you are UK passport holder. Then you are eligible for 144h visa-free transit for the layover in Beijing and Shanghai. Therefore, no visa is needed.
