About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Airtravel LAX-Shanghai(transit)-Jakarta-Shanghai-LAX

We are 2 seniors holding US Passport. Can we go ahead and get airtickets
as above, and make the stop in Shanghai and apply the 144 hrs visa free ?
Can we also make the 2nd stop (144 hrs) on the way back to LAX?

Both are fine if Shanghai is your only stop in China.
