I know about the consequences with overstaying the first time, but what if you overstay on a visa a second time? What are the consequences?

You need to pay CNY500 per day after overstaying, but the capped amount won’t exceed CNY10,000. But if the circumstances are serious, it's possible for you to get detained or blacklisted.
