Laos-Shanghai-Los Angeles USA

I am a valid US passport holder. I will be flying to Shanghai from Laos, staying in Shanghai for 2 days. And, then I will be flying out of Shanghai to Los Angeles USA. Do I qualify for the 72 hour visa-free transit? If so, I apply for that in the airport when I get to Shanghai, correct?

Yes, you can use the 72h or 144h visa free policy. You should inform your airlines about your layover in Shanghai before leaving from Laos, fill in the Arrival/Departure Card onboard, and go to the designated counter in Shanghai Airport to get a stay permit to apply the free-visa transit.
